Pocket knife - safety rules you need to know

Although best rated pocket knives are essential in daily life, they can be a threat if you don’t use them the right way. Learn these safety rules in using pocket knives to prevent yourself and others from getting hurt by this useful tool.

Safety circle

When using a pocket knife, remember to keep it in a safety circle, make sure others won’t come through this invisible barrier and hurt themselves. To get a better visual of this safety circle range, hold out a closed knife and at arm’s length and take a spin. Check your working zone to see if you’re too close to others. Adjust the distance if needed.

Open and close

A good pocket knife has a foldable blade, which is safe for handling. But you have to open and close it the right way or you can easily hurt yourself.

To open, hold the knife with your non-dominant tightly and use the thumbnail of the other hand to pull the blade out. Do this at a slow pace and make sure the blade doesn’t snap back. Keep pulling until the blade opens completely and locked in place.

To close, just do the process in reverse. Hold the handle with your non-dominant hand and fold the blade with the other hand. Check carefully to make sure the blade is completely inside its cover.

Passing a knife

It’s better to do this when it closed. But if you have to pass the knife when the blade opens, make sure you do it the right way so no one will get hurt. The passer will hold the blade with its sharp edge facing out of their palm. The receiver will take it by the handle, and let the passer know they can let go when the receiver gets a properly hold of the knife.

Maintenance

Even the best pocket knives in the world need a well-maintained routine to keep them working good and safe. Although pocket knife’s blade is usually made with stainless steel, the material can be worn out through time. Remember to sharpen your blade helps in usage and keep you safe while using. Also, check the knife’s hinge regularly to keep its lock mechanism working properly. If you find your pocket knife is too wobble, consider repairing it or buying a new one.

Usage

When you use a pocket knife to cut things, face it outwards, away from you and others. This is a basic technique. And it would be best if you keep in mind that even though pocket knives help us in a lot of task daily, they’re not multipurpose tools. So don’t try using them for tasks not meant for them. Number one rule is to not point or pry a knife towards others, even if you have the coolest pocket knife on the market. There are proper ways to show it. Don’t put yourself and others in danger because of this stupid stunt.

If you follow these safety rules strictly, using the best pocket knife will be more comfortable and safer. They’re somewhat a kind of weapon after all. Always remember that they can hurt you and others if you perform the wrong technique.
